BSky grows when Twitter stumbles
I'm a fan of Bluesky.
The service's growth has unfolded as a series of surge events, often triggered by external factors.
Recent activity spikes, in particular, are driven by controversial Twitter actions.
As per Wikipedia:
- In August 2024, following the blocking of Twitter in Brazil, Bluesky gained over 4 million users in under two weeks.
- In October 2024, following changes to Twitter's block feature and Terms of Service to analyze users' content for AI training purposes by default, over 1.2 million users joined Bluesky within 2 days
- In the weeks following the 2024 United States presidential election on November 5, 2024, in which former president Donald Trump was re-elected for a second non-consecutive term, millions of Twitter users ... joined Bluesky.
Does Bluesky’s continued growth depend on Twitter missteps?
Given Twitter's proven propensity for alienating users, it seems only a matter of time before Bluesky benefits again. 🤷
But is being "Not Twitter" a sustainable growth strategy?
Personally, I'm still trying to understand whether there are features/capabilities that:
- fundamentally differentiate BSky from Twitter, and
- ensure long term success.
Here's hoping! 🙏
